Marketing Mix for Small Businesses

Yesterday The Times had an article describing how small businesses are investing their marketing money in 2012 .

The allocation of their marketing investment is:

  • Website (17%)
  • Email Marketing (17%)
  • Direct marketing (13%)
  • Networking (13%)
  • Social Media (13%)
  • Advertising (12%)
  • Exhibitions (9%)
  • Telemarketing (6%)

For social media these companies are using the following sites:

  • Facebook (51%)
  • Twitter (42%)
  • LinkedIn (39%)
  • Flickr (16%)

The total marketing budgets for SMEs is:

  • Less than £10,000 (39%)
  • £10,000 – £50,000 (14%)
  • £50,000 – £100,000 (14%)
  • Greater then £100,000 (32%)

Interestingly only 13% of small businesses use Pay-Per-Click advertising yet 82% of these same companies don't make a return on this investment!
